What your YES vote means:

This referendum is about more than just extending the Mark Clark Expressway (I-526); it's about making Charleston County safer, more connected, and environmentally sustainable. Key projects include enhancing existing roads and bridges to increase safety and reduce congestion, strengthening infrastructure to meet the needs of our growing population, and improving pedestrian and bicycle safety by adding sidewalks to connect neighborhoods and public spaces. With a focus on alleviating traffic and investing in our transit system, the referendum also prioritizes preserving greenspace and protecting Charleston’s natural resources from overdevelopment.

Enhancing Existing Roads and Strengthening Infrastructure:

Making necessary repairs and building crucial enhancements to increase driver safety, reduce traffic congestion, and accommodate Charleston County's growing population and needs.

Increasing Safety:

Reducing gridlock and improving the flow of traffic means fewer accidents and quicker emergency assistance when needed

Alleviating Traffic:

Reducing travel times by projected 75% from Johns Island, 45% from West Ashley, and 33% from James Island

Improving Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety:

Adding sidewalks to facilitate pedestrian and bike access and to link neighborhoods, schools, parks, and commercial zones

Investing in Transit:

Operating our transit system and helping realize transformational enhancements to regional mobility to ease congestion

Preserving Greenspace:

Protecting land and our natural resources from overdevelopment while improving health and quality of life
